The federal states have transferred the state supervision and control of transnational gambling to the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL). The public-law institution is located in Halle (Saale) and is currently still at a developmental state. The assumption of responsibility for the tasks that the member states have transferred to it shall be taking place step by step.
The central task that has been transferred to the GGL is the regulation of the German gambling market with effect from 1 January 2023, in the form that it checks gambling poviders and approves them on a national scale, it hereby ensuring that the gambling provider with a permit adheres to the rules that protect the gambler against addiction to gambling and manipulation.
The GGL shall already be taking legal action against illegal gambling providers and the advertising for such services with effect from 1 July 2022.
